Montgomery is the capital of Alabama as well as the 2nd largest city in Alabama. Being the capital of the state, local and state government provides a large number of jobs in the area. There are also at least 5 colleges & universities in the city as well (Auburn University Montgomery, Alabama State University, Troy University Montgomery, Faulkner University, & Huntingdon College) as well as the prestigious Thomas Goode Jones School of Law. The city has a large military presence with Maxwell Air Force Base/Gunter Air Force Annex which is home to the prestigious Air War College. Montgomery also boasts a heavy manufacturing presence as home to Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. There are a number of support companies in the area for the automotive as well as aerospace industries. It is also home to the minor league baseball team, the Montgomery Biscuits.
Montgomery has been nationally recognized for its downtown revitalization, especially the Riverfront Park area. Surrounding areas such as Pike Road and Prattville have experienced tremendous growth in recent years as well.
